A French “nécessaire de voyage” or small perfume/essence/toilette case (late 1800s / early 1900s). Sourced in France, this little wooden box with original key would have held the original owners personal toiletries that he would have taken with him/her on their travels via horse and carriage. Beautiful inlay work and brass fittings that have heavy patina.

These often held multiple little glass bottles for perfume, smelling salts, or toiletry liquids, and the mirror was for grooming while traveling.

• Fitted velvet insert with multiple circular holes for bottles. This one has 3 of the original 6.

• About the dotted bottle: it may be a decorative replacement (or just one of the original mixed bottles). The colored “confetti/spatter” look isn’t uncommon, but sets often end up “married” over time.
