Step back into the golden age of investigative journalism with this beautiful crimson red cover 1910 first edition of Notes of a War Correspondent. Long before satellite feeds and instant updates, the dashing Richard Harding Davis was the world’s most celebrated combat reporter. Known for his impeccable style and fierce bravery, Davis famously charged up San Juan Hill alongside Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders and braved the frontlines of the Boer War.
Finding early 20th-century cloth bindings in this state is a true collector's joy. While many surviving copies suffer from heavily sun-bleached spines, the rich crimson cloth on this copy remains strikingly vibrant, presenting beautifully on a shelf.
Most remarkably, the delicate original tissue guard inside is completely intact. Originally placed by Scribner's craftsmen to protect the title page from the ink of the frontispiece portrait of Davis, these thin papers are almost always torn, stained, or missing entirely after 116 years. Its survival indicates this volume was deeply cherished and carefully preserved in a stable, smoke-free home environment over the last century.
