History

The Meriden Britannia Company, founded in 1852 in Meriden, Connecticut, grew to become one of the largest producers of silver-plated ware in the world during the late 19th century. This teapot, bearing the pattern number 1899, exemplifies the eclectic design sensibilities of the late Victorian era, blending Neo-Grec classical fluting and beaded borders with the refined geometric engine-turning popularized by the Aesthetic Movement. Such pieces were central to the elaborate tea rituals of late 19th-century American households, representing both functional utility and middle-class aspiration.
