History
The gargoulette—the French regional variant of the Iberian botijo—is an ancient utilitarian vessel design with dual spouts (one to fill, one to drink or pour from) and a high handle for carrying. During the mid-to-late 20th-century revival of French studio pottery, artisan workshops around Aubagne and the Garlaban mountain range in Provence reimagined traditional earthenware water jugs into heavy, tactile stoneware (grès) objects that combined rustic heritage with modernist studio ceramics.
