History
During the late 19th century, provincial studio photography expanded rapidly across France following the popularity of cartes-de-visite and cabinet card formats. Studios such as Jules Gotte's in Bourges, situated near the Gare d'Orléans, provided formalized portraiture for local patrons. Ebonized oval frames ("cadres ovales en bois noirci") were a defining hallmark of French Napoléon III and Third Republic interior decor, widely used for family memorial and keepsake portraits.
