The Story

An elegant late Victorian pink transfer-printed earthenware plate in the classic 'Italy' pattern, manufactured by the Staffordshire pottery Edge, Malkin & Co. The central medallion depicts a romanticized Italianate landscape featuring a castle atop a hill, rustic buildings, prominent trees, and a foreground scene of figures guiding a cart drawn by a pair of oxen. This central scene is framed by a wide, intricate border of repeating grapevines, foliate scrolls, and geometric diapering.

History

Edge, Malkin & Co. operated the Newport Pottery in Burslem, Staffordshire, from 1870 until 1903, producing a wide variety of earthenware tablewares. The 'Italy' pattern reflects the enduring British fascination with romanticized Mediterranean landscapes, a thematic staple of transferware design since the early 19th century. The inclusion of 'Made in England' on the printed mark indicates a production date after the passage of the US McKinley Tariff Act of 1890, dating this piece precisely to the final decade of the firm's operation.
