History
This bust is a classic example of the late 19th-century Italian Renaissance Revival (Stile Umbertino), during which Tuscan workshops produced numerous decorative plaster and terracotta busts of celebrated historical and literary figures. Margaret of Navarre, the formidable Queen Consort of King Henry IV of France and III of Navarre, was a popular subject as one of the most fashionable women of her time; her dress influenced many of Europe's royal courts. Busts of this type were highly sought after by Grand Tour travelers and collectors seeking to recreate the romantic atmosphere of a Renaissance palazzo in their Victorian or Edwardian homes.
