The Story

A beautiful and wonderfully timeworn 19th-century French earthenware cheese-draining bowl, traditionally known as a moule à fromage or faisselle. Once an essential part of rural French cheesemaking, this distinctive vessel features an unusual raised central pedestal designed to support fresh curds while allowing the whey to drain away.

What makes this piece particularly special is its remarkable patina. Generations of use have left the earthenware with layers of warm cream, pale ochre, earthy mineral deposits, and beautifully irregular staining. The surface tells the story of its former life in a French dairy, where it was valued as a practical, everyday object.

Its generous proportions, softly rounded silhouette, and architectural central platform give it an almost sculptural quality. No longer simply a utilitarian dairy vessel, it makes a striking decorative object for a kitchen island, farmhouse table, or dining room centerpiece.

A wonderful example of French provincial pottery, celebrating the beauty of humble materials, traditional craftsmanship, and the passage of time.

The irregularities, worn surfaces, and aged coloration are integral to its character and appeal. Recommended for decorative use.
