A beautifully aged antique European giltwood serving tray, featuring an elegant raised gallery, scrolling foliate ornament, carved/molded gilt decoration, and original side handles.
This substantial rectangular tray has the wonderful character that only comes with age. The warm wood surface is surrounded by a decorative raised border with aged gold/gilt detailing, much of which has naturally worn away over the years to reveal the darker wood beneath. At the center is a delicate Neoclassical-style decorative motif, adding another layer of sophistication to the piece.
The original side handles are particularly charming, with dark wood handgrips held by aged metal mounts. The construction and materials are consistent with the type of decorative serving trays produced in Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
A Little History
Decorative serving trays became increasingly popular in European and American homes throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. They were used not only for carrying tea, drinks, and refreshments but also as beautiful decorative objects in their own right. Elaborately decorated trays could be displayed on sideboards, tea tables, consoles, or dining room furniture when not in use.
Giltwood—wood decorated with a gold or gold-toned finish—was especially prized for bringing the appearance of luxury and formal ornament into the home. European decorative traditions frequently incorporated scrolling foliage, shells, cartouches, urns, and Neoclassical motifs, several of which are represented on this tray. Comparable European giltwood trays from the 18th and 19th centuries demonstrate how this combination of carved ornament and gilding was used in sophisticated interiors.
